PGT Window Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
PGT window installation in Houston typically runs $450 – $1,200 per window installed, depending on the series, size, and whether you’re replacing a full unit or just a failed sash or balance. We stock PGT-compatible replacement parts on our trucks for most common series, and in many cases we can complete a single-window swap the same day we diagnose it. How owners usually find us: a window won’t stay up, a sash is fogged between the glass, or a latch let go after years of Houston humidity and heat doing what that climate does to hardware. The part number is worn off the sticker, and the question is whether the fix is worth it. This page answers that.
Key takeaways:
- PGT is built for coastal wind loads, which means heavier sashes and beefier balances than a typical builder-grade window. That affects the part and the price.
- Most PGT window failures in Houston are repairable without replacing the whole frame. We’ll tell you if that’s the case before any money changes hands.
- Every quote includes labor, the exact part brand, and the warranty in writing. No revised invoice at the door.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
We work on the PGT series you’re most likely to have in a Houston home: WinGuard (aluminum and vinyl), SpectraGuard, and the older PGT Premier and Classic Vue lines you still see in Sugar Land, Katy, and the Heights. If you’re not sure which series you have, check the corner of the sash or frame for a small etched or printed sticker. PGT often stamps the series code and glass make-up right on the frame edge. Failing that, pull the sash in and measure the visible glass width and height. That plus a photo of the lock style is usually enough for Owen to identify the series from the truck before we even set an appointment.
One compatibility gotcha Houston owners run into: WinGuard sash balances are not interchangeable with SpectraGuard, even when the sash dimensions match. The balance shoe design differs between vinyl and aluminum. We stock OEM PGT balances and hardware for the current lines, and for discontinued series we source from a distributor that still carries genuine PGT replacement stock. Our position on aftermarket parts: we’ll install them where they match spec, but we’ll tell you up front if an OEM part is the better bet for a window that takes hurricane wind loads. On a coastal Houston home, it usually is.
Signs Your PGT Window Installation Is Failing
- Sash drops hard when you let go. The block-and-tackle balance system has failed. In Houston, the heat dries out the internal lubricant years before the spring actually breaks. You’ll feel it get sluggish before it fails outright.
- Condensation or haze between the glass. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed. PGT uses a dual-seal system, but our humidity and afternoon sun are hard on the outer seal. Once the argon or krypton fill escapes, the glass fogs and the thermal performance drops.
- Hard to lock or the lock tab bent. A misaligned sash from a sagging corner often puts strain on the lock hardware. We see this a lot in older homes where the foundation has shifted a fraction, pulling the frame slightly out of square.
- You can hear wind or feel drafts around a closed window. It’s rarely the glass. It’s weatherstripping gone flat from heat cycles, or a sash that isn’t seating tight in the frame because a balance is dragging.
- The cranks on a casement window spin but nothing moves. The operator gear inside has stripped. This is a small, cheap part, but replacing it correctly means removing the sash and reseating the hinge, which is where the patience comes in.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest range for Houston, based on the work we’ve priced and completed hundreds of times:
- Single balance or pivot shoe replacement: $180 – $340 installed
- Locking hardware replacement: $120 – $220 installed
- Weatherstripping and sash realignment: $150 – $300 per window
- Casement operator or hinge replacement: $200 – $380 per window
- Full sash replacement (including new glass pack): $450 – $800, depending on series and glass
- Complete window unit replacement, labor included: $700 – $1,200 per opening for most PGT residential series
You’ll get a written price before any work starts. The Kingswell Guarantee puts it in writing: the price, the arrival window, the clean job site, and the warranty. If the part fails within 365 days, we come back at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s handed to you on paper, not described over the phone.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things safely: if the sash is locked into place but feels loose, if the weatherstripping is visibly flattened, or if the lock tab is bent. Those are easy to spot and photograph for us. But when a balance or spring inside a PGT Vinyl WinGuard sash breaks, keep your hands out of it. Those balances carry tension, and the sash can come down hard and take a finger or break the glass. Same goes for casement operators under spring load. What starts as a $100 part becomes a much bigger job when the sash lands on the sill wrong. Call (325) 326-4211. We’ll ask for the sticker info if you can find it, and we’ll give you a straight answer about what’s worth doing. Measure twice, quote straight, show up when I said I would.
FAQs
You can expect 20 to 25 years from the frame and glass, but the moving hardware and seals will need attention well before that. In Houston’s heat and humidity, we usually see weatherstripping flattening by year eight, and balances getting sluggish between years ten and fifteen. The glass pack itself should hold clear for two decades unless the home takes a lot of afternoon sun on one elevation. Call (325) 326-4211 and we’ll give you a read on your specific windows over the phone.
Depends on the part. A balance shoe or pivot pin is a replace, not a repair. Same with a fogged glass pack. But a sagging sash, a stiff operator, or a lock that’s just sticking can sometimes be cleaned, lubed, and realigned. We won’t sell you a replacement part when a tune-up fixes it. That candor is the whole reason we put the guarantee in writing.
A single balance, lock, or operator swap usually takes an hour to ninety minutes once we’re on site, assuming the part’s on the truck. A full replacement window takes half a day. We’ll give you a hard arrival window before the job, which is part of the Kingswell Guarantee.
We stock common PGT balance shoes, pivot pins, locks, and weatherstripping for the series we see most in Houston. If we don’t have it, we’ll tell you the lead time in plain days, not a vague “next week.” And if what you need is a full PGT unit rather than a part, we can order it. We also carry CGI, CWS, and ES Windows when the job calls for a different glass or a different wind rating. Same written price, same guarantee.
If you’ve got a PGT window acting up and you’re tired of second-guessing it, call us at (325) 326-4211 for a free estimate. You’ll talk to a real person, and they can usually sort out over the phone whether this is an hour-long fix or a full replacement. If it’s the former, we’ll tell you. If it’s the latter, we’ll still tell you, and you’ll have a real number before we ever walk through the door.
