ECO Window Systems Window Replacement: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Most ECO Window Systems window replacements in Houston run between $450 and $900 per window installed, depending on the series, glass package, and whether the frame needs work. We stock ECO-compatible sashes, glass units, balancers, and hardware on our trucks, which means a lot of Houston homeowners get it handled the same week they call. The symptom that usually gets our phone ringing: a window that suddenly won’t stay up, won’t lock, or has fog between the glass that won’t wipe off.
What catches most ECO owners off guard is how quietly a window quits. One month it’s a little stiff. The next, a balancer lets go and the sash drops like a guillotine. Or the low-e coating starts to haze and you’re looking through a fogged-up pane every morning. That’s where this guide comes in. We’ll walk through what fails, what it costs in the Houston market, and when it makes sense to call a pro rather than fight it yourself.
Which ECO Window Systems Models This Applies To
ECO Window Systems builds a few distinct lines, and parts don’t always swap between them. The ECO Classic series uses a standard vinyl sash profile with block-and-tackle balancers, while the ECO Traditions and ECO Elite lines run heavier frames and often use constant-force coil balances instead. If you’re holding a failed ECO sash and wondering what fits, look for the label etched into the top edge of the sash or on a sticker inside the frame track. It’ll carry a manufacturing code and usually the series name.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Houston owners hit: ECO changed its glass thickness spec on double-hung units around 2016. Older units took 3/4″ insulated glass. Newer runs use 7/8″ or 1″ depending on the energy package. If you measure the glass pocket wrong, the replacement unit won’t seat and the sash won’t close. We measure every glass unit before we order, and we verify the series against ECO’s spec sheets, because assuming is how you end up with a $400 piece of glass that doesn’t fit.
On OEM versus aftermarket: ECO’s factory balancers and locks are solid, but the aftermarket replacements we carry from Caldwell and Amesbury match the factory specs at roughly half the price. Where we insist on OEM is glass. The ECO low-e coatings and argon-fill specs are specific, and a generic Houston glass shop unit won’t match the original energy performance. We order ECO-compatible glass units built to the same spec as the original, not a “close enough” substitution.
Westlight Windows Houston is an independent installer and service provider. We’re not affiliated with ECO Window Systems, but we install and service their products alongside the other lines we carry, including PGT, CGI, and CWS.
Signs Your ECO Window Systems Window Replacement Is Failing
- The sash won’t stay up. This is almost always a failed balancer, not a frame problem. ECO’s block-and-tackle balancers wear out in Texas heat faster than the sash itself, and when one lets go, the window slams shut under its own weight.
- Fog or haze between the glass. The seal around the insulated glass unit has failed, letting Houston humidity inside the airspace. On ECO units, this shows up first at the bottom corners of the pane. The glass isn’t cleanable from either side, because the moisture is inside the unit.
- The window is harder to open than it used to be. Dirt, worn friction pads, or a bent hinge channel causes drag. Left alone, the extra force cracks the sash corners or snaps the lock mechanism.
- The lock doesn’t engage or feels loose. ECO’s sweep locks and cam locks wear down over thousands of cycles. A lock that half-catches leaves the window effectively unsecured, which matters in a city that sees real break-in attempts.
- You can feel a draft at the meeting rail. The weatherstripping on the sash has compressed or pulled out of its track. In Houston’s humid summers, that draft adds real load to your AC and lets moisture ride the air into the wall cavity.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what ECO Window Systems window replacement costs in the Houston market right now, based on the work we’ve quoted and completed over the past year:
- Glass unit replacement only (seal failure): $220 – $380 per window installed
- Balancer replacement (sash won’t stay up): $140 – $220 per window, parts and labor
- Full sash replacement: $350 – $550 per sash installed
- Complete window replacement (frame and all): $600 – $950 per window installed, depending on size and glass package
The range comes down to three things: what series your ECO window is, whether the sash and frame are square enough to reuse, and what glass package the original unit carried. Impact-rated or triple-pane ECO glass runs at the top end. A simple balancer swap is the bottom.
Every price we quote is a written number handed to you before any work starts. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee and it’s baked into how we operate. You’ll see the parts cost, the labor, and the total on paper before we touch the window. No revised invoice at the door. If we install a replacement part and it fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s in writing on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
Window glass replacement on an ECO unit is not a safe DIY project, and I’ll say that straight. The glass units are heavy, the sashes are under tension, and the vinyl tracks and glazing beads are easy to crack if you don’t hit the angles right. If a sash falls while you’re pulling the glazing bead, you’re looking at a shattered glass unit and a real injury risk. Balancer replacement has its own hazard: the coil assemblies are spring-loaded, and if they unwind in your hand, the damage is to your fingers, not the window.
What you can safely do: clean the tracks with a dry brush, check that the weep holes at the bottom of the frame aren’t clogged, and note exactly what the window is doing so you can tell us. Write down whether it’s the top or bottom sash, when the problem started, and whether the glass is fogged or cracked. That five-minute inspection saves a second trip.
If the window is sagging, fogged, or won’t stay up, call us at (325) 326-4211. We’ll get your ECO window matched, priced, and fixed. FAQs
In Houston’s heat and humidity, plan on 12 to 18 years for the glass seals on an ECO unit, and 8 to 12 years for the balancers and hardware before they need service. Windows on the west-facing side of a house, where the afternoon sun hits hard, fail faster than north-facing units. The low-e coating and argon fill degrade over that span even if the window still opens fine.
Yes, and most of the time we fix the specific failed part rather than replacing the whole window. A fogged glass unit gets a new insulated unit ordered to ECO’s spec. A dropped sash gets new balancers. The lock, the weatherstripping, the pivot bars: all replaceable without pulling the frame. Full window replacement only makes sense when the frame itself is warped, the sill is rotting, or the homeowner wants to upgrade to a more energy-efficient glass package at the same time.
A glass unit swap or balancer replacement on a single ECO window runs about an hour once the part is in hand. If we need to order the glass unit to match your ECO series and energy package, expect five to ten business days from measurement to install. Full window replacements run a half day for one or two windows, depending on how the original was flashed into the wall.
We keep ECO-compatible balancers, locks, weatherstripping, and pivot hardware on our trucks, so a lot of hardware repairs happen on the first visit. Replacement glass units are ordered to match your exact ECO series and glass spec, because nothing on a truck fits every ECO unit built since the company changed glass thickness in 2016. Call (325) 326-4211 and we’ll tell you whether your part is a same-week fix or a sent-out glass order. Estimates are free.
