Therma-Tru Door Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Therma-Tru door installation in Houston typically runs $450 to $1,900 for a standard single entry door, with most slab (door-only) replacements landing between $450 and $850 and full frame-and-door systems running $1,100 to $1,900 installed. We stock Therma-Tru replacement components on our trucks and can usually schedule your install within a few days of the quote. Most Houston owners discover their Therma-Tru door needs attention the same way: a corner that suddenly drags on the threshold, a deadbolt that no longer lines up with its strike plate, or daylight sneaking in around the weatherstrip after one of our humid Gulf summers works its magic on the frame.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
We install across the full Therma-Tru line: Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star, Pulse, and Benchmark doors. The part that matters for compatibility is your door slab’s thickness. Therma-Tru residential entry doors are built either 1-3/4 inches thick (standard) or 2-1/4 inches thick (some Classic-Craft and premium models). Before you call, check the hinge edge of your door for a manufacturer label, usually a small white sticker with a series code. If the label is gone, we measure the slab thickness and hinge spacing on site and match it from there. One Houston-specific gotcha: Therma-Tru doors installed more than about ten years ago in this market often have frames that have shifted with our clay soil. A door that looks “warped” is frequently a door hung in a frame that’s moved a quarter-inch out of square. We can tell the difference in about twenty minutes.
Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing
- Corner drag on the threshold. The bottom corner of your door scrapes when you open or close it. The cause is almost always frame settlement or hinge wear, not a bad door slab. Houston’s expansive clay soil expands and contracts with every rain-drought cycle, and older frames slowly shift out of square.
- Deadbolt that fights the strike plate. You have to pull or push the door to get the lock to throw. This means the door and frame are no longer aligned. Left uncorrected, it wears down your deadbolt and can leave the door unsecured when the temps drop and the door shrinks.
- Daylight visible around the weatherstrip. Stand inside on a bright day and look at the door’s edges. Gaps mean the weatherstrip is compressed or the frame has moved. In Houston, that gap is also an air-conditioned air leak, which you will notice on your July electric bill.
- Swelled or sticky edges after rain. Therma-Tru fiberglass skins don’t swell, but the frames and jambs around them are wood in many installations. Houston’s humidity causes the jamb to hold moisture and press in on the door. It is a frame issue, not a door issue.
- Loose or sagging hinges. If the top hinge screws turn freely or the door drops when you open it a full 90 degrees, the hinge side of the frame is compromised. We routinely replace hinge screws with longer structural screws that bite into the framing stud before re-hanging the door.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here are the installed price ranges we quote in Houston for Therma-Tru door work. Every number below is a bracket, not a promise, because your final written price depends on the condition of the frame and the exact Therma-Tru model you have. What never changes is the sequencing: you get the written price before any work starts, and it does not move when we are standing in your doorway.
- Slab-only replacement (we reuse your existing frame): $450 to $850 installed
- Full door and frame replacement: $1,100 to $1,900 installed
- Frame repair and re-hang, keeping your existing Therma-Tru slab: $300 to $650 installed
- Weatherstrip, threshold, and hinge replacement package: $125 to $400 installed
Every installation includes disposal of your old door, shimming and leveling to the frame, adjusting the bottom sweep to the threshold, and re-aligning the strike plate so your deadbolt works with one hand. Workmanship on installation is covered under the Kingswell Guarantee, which you receive in writing at job completion. If the work is not right, we return and fix it at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely do as a Therma-Tru owner in Houston. Lubricate the hinges once a year with a silicone spray. Check the weatherstrip for compression and replace it yourself if the old strip peels out of its kerf cleanly. Tighten a loose hinge screw if it grabs when you turn it. What you should not attempt is re-hanging a full Therma-Tru door by yourself. These slabs are heavy (a Classic-Craft 1-3/4 door can weigh over 90 pounds), and a door that slips off its hinges during a self-install has broken more than a few toes and tile floors. There is no high-tension spring or electrical hazard here, but the weight and geometry are unforgiving. If the frame has shifted, you will also need a level, shims, a power planer, and about three hours of patience. We would rather you spend your Saturday somewhere else. Call (325) 326-4211 and we will show up in the window we give you, measure twice, quote straight, and install it right.
FAQs
A properly installed Therma-Tru door slab lasts 25 to 35 years in Houston’s climate, while the frame, weatherstrip, and threshold typically need attention every 7 to 10 years due to heat, humidity, and clay-soil movement. The fiberglass skin itself holds up extremely well; it is the components around it that fail first. Call (325) 326-4211 for a free estimate on refresh work.
Most Therma-Tru door problems are repairable: hinge replacement, frame re-shimming, weatherstrip replacement, threshold adjustment, and lock alignment all fall under repair rather than replacement. We only recommend a new slab when the door itself is cracked, delaminated, or severely warped from frame neglect. We will tell you which one you need and show you why on site.
A slab-only replacement usually takes 3 to 4 hours, while a full door and frame replacement runs 4 to 6 hours for a standard single entry in Houston. If we are repairing a shifted frame, that adds about an hour. We give you an arrival window as part of your written quote and honor it.
We keep common Therma-Tru-compatible parts on our trucks: weatherstripping, bottom sweeps, thresholds, hinges, and strike plates for standard 1-3/4 and 2-1/4 door thicknesses. Rare slab sizes or custom glass inserts are ordered from Therma-Tru and typically arrive within a week. We are an independent installer, not a Therma-Tru company store, which means we match the right part to your door without pushing one brand over another. Alongside Therma-Tru, we install PGT, CGI, CWS, and other quality lines, so you get the product that fits the job.
