CWS Impact Garage Doors: The Houston Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CWS-compatible impact garage doors and replacement parts throughout Houston, with most complete door replacements running $1,850 to $4,200 installed depending on size, series, and reinforcement requirements. If you have a CWS impact door that’s binding, grinding, or refusing to close after years of Gulf Coast humidity and wind, we can typically match the part and have it functioning same week.

Call (325) 326-4211

Most Houston homeowners discover a failing CWS part the hard way: a bang in the track during hurricane season, a door that suddenly weighs twice what it should, or a spring that lets go in the middle of a July afternoon when the garage is 110 degrees. The door almost never fails all at once. It gives warning signs for weeks or months first.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

We install and repair parts for CWS impact-rated garage doors across the residential series that are common in Houston: the standard wind-load rated models, the heavier impact-certified units, and the reinforced track systems paired with them. The critical distinction is whether your door carries a wind-load sticker (typically 130, 150, or 180 mph rating) or a full impact certification label. Those two categories use different bottom brackets, different roller stems, and different reinforcement plates, and ordering the wrong part wastes a week.

To identify your part, check the small metal or foil sticker on the inside edge of the door panel. It will show the series number and wind rating. If the sticker is gone, measure the panel thickness: most CWS impact doors are 2 inches thick, while their non-impact cousins run 1-3/8 inches. That alone tells us which parts catalog to pull from.

With CWS specifically, we’ve seen better long-term results using OEM parts for springs and hinges, while good aftermarket rollers and weatherstripping hold up just as well for less money. The springs are wound and tempered for a specific door weight, and CWS impact doors are heavier than standard doors of the same size. Aftermarket springs for a standard door will not hold the correct tension on an impact-rated panel.

We also stock compatible parts for PGT, CGI, and ES Windows impact doors, so if you have more than one brand on the property, one call covers it.

Signs Your CWS Impact Garage Door Is Failing

  • The door jerks or shudders on the way up. This usually means one torsion spring has lost tension or broken, and the opener is dragging the full unbalanced weight of the door. The remaining spring is now carrying double its rated load and will fail soon.
  • You hear a loud bang from the garage, like a car backfiring. A torsion spring snapped. The door will not open safely by motor or by hand, and the cable on that side is now slack and can whip free under the remaining tension.
  • The door is crooked at the bottom or grazes the track on one side. A broken or stretched cable on one side is letting the panel ride uneven. Continuing to operate it bends the track, and then you’re replacing tracks, not just cables.
  • Visible rust streaks run down from the rollers or the bottom bracket. Houston’s salty air and humidity attack roller bearings faster than inland climates. Once a roller seizes, it carves a groove into the track and the door starts binding at the same spot every cycle. Catching it at the streak stage saves the track.
  • A sag in the center of the top panel when the door is closed. This means the reinforcement strut, the horizontal steel bar that gives an impact door its load rating, has worked loose or rusted through. That is not a cosmetic problem. The door has lost its rated wind resistance until it’s fixed.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, here’s what we charge for common CWS impact door repairs, parts and labor included:

  • Broken torsion spring replacement (one spring): $285 – $385
  • Broken torsion spring replacement (both springs, recommended): $425 – $560
  • Broken cable or cable drum replacement: $180 – $260
  • Roller replacement, full door (10 rollers): $220 – $310
  • Bottom bracket replacement (impact-rated, per side): $160 – $240
  • Full reinforcement strut replacement (installed): $195 – $285
  • Complete CWS impact door replacement (single car, installed): $1,850 – $2,900
  • Complete CWS impact door replacement (double car, installed): $2,800 – $4,200

The range comes from door weight, wind rating, and whether the track system is still square and reusable. What never changes: you get a written price before we touch the door, no revised invoice at the end, and our workmanship warranty on any repair we make. If a spring we install fails inside the warranty period, we come back and replace it. No charge, no negotiation, it’s in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Let me be plain about the springs, because this is the one place a homeowner gets hurt. A CWS impact door weighs between 250 and 450 pounds, and the torsion springs that lift it are under enough tension to shatter bone. People have lost fingers and worse trying to wind or unwind a spring with improvised tools. If a spring or cable has failed, call us at (325) 326-4211. This is not a Saturday project.

What you can safely check yourself: photograph the sticker on the inside edge of the panel so we know the exact series, feel along the bottom of the door for rust on the brackets, and watch the door run one full cycle. Note where it hesitates or shudders. That information saves us time and you money. What you shouldn’t do is disconnect a cable under tension, back off a spring bolt, or try to lift a door that has lost a spring. The door will not cooperate, and neither will your back.

Owen Satterfield has been measuring, ordering, and installing windows and doors for close to two decades, and the rule he gives every tech is this: measure twice, quote straight, show up when we said we would. That applies to a $200 roller set and a $4,000 door the same way.
