CGI Sliding & Patio Doors: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got a CGI sliding or patio door that’s dragging, sticking, or letting daylight through where it shouldn’t, here’s the short version: we stock and install CGI-compatible sliding and patio door parts across Houston, and most roller, track, and lock replacements run $185 – $520 installed depending on the part and your door’s series. That price includes the part, the labor, the trip, and a written guarantee before we touch anything. You usually discover the failure the way most Houston homeowners do: the door worked fine for eight or ten years, then one Saturday morning it takes two hands and a hip-check to move, or the handle spins without catching, or you notice a quarter-inch slice of sky where the interlock used to seal tight.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI builds sliding glass doors and hinged patio doors under a few series names you’ll see on the corner of the glass or on the frame sticker: the Estate Collection, the Contractor Series, and the iconic Sentinel line, which is CGI’s impact-rated workhorse. Houston code requires impact-rated openings in a lot of coastal-adjacent zones, but even inland, plenty of homes have Sentinels because the previous owner liked the storm rating. Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: CGI door rollers are not universal. The Estate and Sentinel series use different roller assemblies, and the interlock hook profile changed between older production runs and current models. If you swap in a generic roller from a big-box shelf, the door will run for about three weeks and then start grinding again. We match parts against the etching code printed on the glass corner or the sticker inside the door jamb.
Signs Your CGI Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing
- The door takes real effort to slide. This is almost always the bottom rollers. Houston humidity plus the fine grit in our air wears the nylon wheels down to the metal hubs, and once steel runs on aluminum track, it chews the track itself.
- The handle spins but the latch doesn’t move. CGI’s internal lock linkage has a small die-cast arm that fatigue-cracks after a few thousand cycles. The handle still turns, so it feels like a lock problem, but it’s the linkage inside the door, not the cylinder.
- You can see daylight or feel air at the meeting stile. The interlock hook is a molded nylon piece on most CGI sliders. After years of Houston sun, that nylon hardens and the hook edges crack off, which means the two door panels no longer interlock and the seal is gone.
- The door grinds or scrapes in one spot. That’s usually a bent or gauge-worn track section. Houston slab homes shift with our clay soil, and a quarter-inch of settlement will make a slider bind on one end of the track.
- Water stains on the floor or drywall near the bottom corner. That’s the weep system blocked and the door’s bottom sweep degrading. CGI doors have weep slots along the bottom track; once they clog with pollen and dust, water backs up into the home instead of draining out.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Most CGI sliding door parts in Houston run like this: a full roller replacement runs $185 – $290 per panel, a new interlock hook or exterior gasket runs $120 – $210, a latch and linkage replacement runs $190 – $320, and a track repair or section replacement runs $260 – $520 depending on how much track is actually damaged. A full door tune-up operation, which is rollers plus interlock plus weather seals plus track realignment, is generally $350 – $600 for a single slider. We give you a written price before any work begins, and it’s the price you pay; there are no revised invoices at the door. The written guarantee covers the parts and our labor, and per the Kingswell Guarantee, if the repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Sliding door parts are usually not a high-danger repair like torsion springs or electrical work, but there’s one exception: lifting a CGI slider panel out of its track without a second set of hands. Those glass panels weigh 150 pounds or more, and when they tip, they take a person with them. Beyond weight, the real risk with DIY is ordering the wrong part. CGI’s current production rollers won’t fit a 2009 Sentinel door, and a door that’s dragging isn’t always the rollers; the problem is sometimes a bent track, which no roller swap will fix. What you can safely check: clean the bottom track with a vacuum and a damp rag, and sight down the track to see if it’s actually bent or just blocked. Beyond that, call us at (325) 326-4211 and we will tell you what’s wrong before we quote a price.
FAQs
In Houston’s humidity and with the fine sediment we get in the air, CGI bottom rollers typically wear out in six to ten years, depending on how often the door cycles and whether the track stays clean. A door that gets twenty cycles a day will eat rollers faster than a guest-room slider that moves twice a week. Call (325) 326-4211 if your door is past that window and dragging.
Repair is almost always possible and worth doing before replacement. Rollers, interlocks, tracks, and lock linkages are replaceable, and CGI’s frame extrusions hold up well even in Houston weather. The only conditions that usually warrant a new door are a rotted wood buck, a bent frame from foundation settlement, or a broken glass package. If you’re not sure which camp you’re in, call (325) 326-4211 and we’ll be straight with you.
Most single-panel roller swaps and lock linkage replacements run about one to two hours from start to clean-up. A full track replacement with two-panel tune-up generally runs a half-day. We book these as dedicated appointments and show up in the window we gave you.
Our trucks carry common CGI rollers for both the Estate and Sentinel series, interlock hooks, and latch linkages, which covers probably eight out of ten part calls in Houston. For older or less common parts, we order OEM pieces from our supplier network, and the lead time counts on the wall calendar, not the salesman’s version of it, so you know the day it arrives.
